Designed for entry-level classes in law enforcement – Top-rated guide to law enforcement

Criminal Justice Today: An Introduction for the Modern Era, Fifteenth Edition continues to stand as the definitive introductory text in the field of law enforcement. Through its comprehensive content, the book thoroughly explores the crime landscape in the United States and the fundamental components of the law enforcement system: law enforcement agencies, judiciary, and penal facilities. By examining the tension between personal freedom and societal control, Schmalleger challenges students to critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the American legal system. In its 15th edition, the book places particular emphasis on racial issues in law enforcement, the use of force by police, and civil liberties, all examined in the context of recent incidents of police shootings and the resulting “anti-law enforcement” sentiment that collectively pose a threat to national unity.
