The Influence of Spanish on the English Language since 1801 – PDF

This e-book presents a systematic analysis of the different words borrowed from Spanish and its national varieties in the past few centuries, making it the first of its kind.

To conduct this research, the author evaluated a comprehensive lexicographical sample of 1355 Spanish borrowings obtained from the Oxford English Dictionary Online. The linguistic focus was on the chronological arrangement of these words originating from Spanish, their stylistic function, contextual usage, and how their meaning has evolved from their earliest use in English to date. To illustrate the current usage of these borrowings, the author used evidence from various English language corpora.
