This 11th edition of the book ensures that students gain a strong background and extensive knowledge of respiratory therapists’ role, the scientific foundation, and clinical procedures. The updated edition comes with five new chapters and covers topics such as online charting systems, research databases, meaningful use, patient databases and simulation. Additionally, discussion on the electronic medical record system has been expanded.

The full-color design of the book helps to enhance the learning process. The unique feature of the “Rules of Thumb” ensures that important formulas, rules, and key points are highlighted for clinical practice. The text is authored by leading figures in the respiratory care industry, ensuring the content is comprehensive and accurate.

This edition’s updated content reflects the current industry trends, ensuring that students are prepared to work in the healthcare environment as respiratory therapists. The book features excerpts of 40 published Clinical Practice Guidelines, providing critical information regarding patient care, indications/contraindications, hazards and complications, assessment of need, and assessment of outcome and monitoring.

Therapist-Driven Protocols (TDPs), which are commonly used in hospitals to assess a patient, initiate care, and evaluate outcomes, are incorporated throughout the book to develop the students’ critical thinking skills and teach the value of following an established protocol.

Bulleted learning objectives aligned with summary checklists are included to emphasize key content at the beginning and end of each chapter, similar to the three areas tested in the NBRC Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination.

Evolve learning resources accompany the book and include PowerPoint slides, an English-Spanish glossary, Test Bank questions, an image collection, a Body Spectrum Anatomy Coloring Book, and college student lecture notes.
