When it comes to deaf education and literacy, most research has been conducted in English-speaking countries. However, it’s important to remember that 90% of deaf children live outside the United States and learn different spoken and signed languages, as well as diverse writing systems. Unfortunately, many of these children face significant struggles in their education. If we want to improve literacy outcomes for deaf students worldwide, we need to study how these children use their local languages, signed or spoken, in conjunction with Deaf culture, to learn to read and write. Toward a Global Understanding of Literacy and Deaf Education (PDF) fills that void in the field, offering a global perspective of current theoretical and applied research on literacy education for deaf learners. Organized by region and country, this volume discusses both alphabetic and non-alphabetic sign systems, with a broad range of topics covered. These include communication methodologies, curriculum, script diversity, bilingual education, reading interventions, sociocultural development, and Deaf cultural developments. Contributors also provide the results of their literacy projects in fifteen different countries and regions. Overall, the aim of this volume is to expand knowledge, foster better communication in the field, and improve global understanding of how to teach literacy to Deaf students of all ages.
