“Kleiner’s A History Of Roman Art, 2nd Edition, (PDF)” offers a comprehensive review of the art of Rome and its empire, spanning from the time of Romulus to the death of Constantine. Presented in its political, historical, and social context, the book covers not only Roman art but also Greek and Etruscan art in Italy before the rise of Rome, as well as Christian art and architecture during the Late Empire.

Each of the 21 chapters digs deep into general issues and individual monuments, supplemented by a series of boxed essays on architectural terminology, religion and mythology, materials and techniques, the cultural context of works of art, the role of patrons in determining the character of Roman monuments, and the problems that ancient architects and artists faced and how they solved them.
