About The Author

Erin C. Amerman

Erin C. Amerman

Dr. Erin C. Amerman has been involved in anatomy and physiology education for more than 20 years as a professor and an author. She is presently teaching at Florida State College at Jacksonville. She is an alumna of Des Moines University (the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences) and the University of West Florida. Erin is presently the author of 6 textbooks, including the best-selling textbook "Human Anatomy and Physiology" and "Exploring Anatomy and Physiology in the Laboratory" series with Morton Publishing Company. She is deeply committed to helping college students succeed in the world of science, and to generating curiosity and excitement about the material.

When Dr. Amerman is not writing or in the classroom, she is tending to her crew of rescued farm animals at Critter Creek Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit she operates and owns with her husband. She also enjoys photographing the local wildlife around her farm, particularly snakes and other reptiles.

This eBook, Exploring Anatomy & Physiology in the Laboratory, 3rd Edition, is a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated manual that is perfectly suited for a two-semester anatomy and physiology laboratory course. It is designed to complement the lecture material, using focused activities and removing redundant exposition and artwork found in most textbooks. This makes it an effective and efficient tool for learning in the lab.

Some of the features of this eBook include:

  1. Objectives. Each unit begins with a set of learning goals that prepare students for what they are expected to know after completing the lab.
  2. Pre-Lab Exercises. These motivate students to actively prepare for the lab by defining key terms, using coloring and labeling units, and saving time that would otherwise be spent reviewing material from the lecture.
  3. Model Inventories. This feature provides organized and easily referenced lists of anatomical structures that students are responsible for recognizing. This is better than the scattered anatomical structures found in many other lab manuals.
  4. Photography and Illustrations. Each figure in the eBook was designed to improve student understanding of important lab models and procedures. It is not simply reproduced artwork and exposition from the related textbook.
  5. Focused Activities. The guiding philosophy of this lab manual is to keep students actively engaged in the laboratory, as they learn best in this way. This is achieved by describing, marking, writing, drawing, and coloring.
  6. Tracing Exercises. These exercises ask students to write turn-by-turn, step-by-step directions tracing various substances (e.g., food molecules, blood cells, waste by-products) through the human body and to trace them on a human body map. This helps students grasp the relationship between function and structure and how various body systems interact.
  7. Hints & Tips. These appear throughout the eBook to help students navigate some of the more complex topics in A&P.
  8. Check Your Recall/Check Your Understanding. Chapter-ending quizzes ensure that students understand important concepts and that learning goals have been achieved.
